How does Alberta Infrastructure handle surplus real estate?

The process is carried out in the following order:

Identifying what is surplus real estate

  • Potential surplus real estate is reviewed by Provincial departments, boards, agencies, crown corporations, schools and health institutions to determine if they have any requirements.

Offering surplus real estate to other levels of government

  • Appraisals of property are obtained to help determine market value.
  • Local governments are contacted and given first priority to purchase at market value.
  • Federal government is given an opportunity to purchase where prior interest is expressed.

Marketing surplus real estate to general public

  • Sales at market value are generally carried out through licensed real estate agents.
  • In most cases, Alberta Infrastructure enters into a MLS listing as a result of the Alberta Real Estate Association’s recommendation of several agents based on expertise, experience, education and type of property.
  • Properties for sale are posted by Alberta Infrastructure.
  • Inquiries are referred to the real estate agent for listed properties.
  • Alberta Infrastructure sale activities are governed by the
Government Organization Act – Schedule 11.
